iPhone Duo animation → MacBook · macOS 14 or newer

The iPhone Duo fold. On your MacBook.

That fluid fold animation from iPhone Duo — MacFold brings it to the MacBook you already own. Tilt the lid and the desktop you are looking at softens and dims from the top down, live, at full frame rate.

What is on the screen in each frame is the real MacFold render at that angle: the desktop blurs from the top down and darkens as the lid comes down — no distortion, the picture stays exactly where it is. The menu bar and the Dock are excluded on purpose, so the Mac stays usable while it runs.

What is actually happening

Capture
A ScreenCaptureKit stream of the built-in display feeds the renderer at up to 60 frames per second.
Fold
A Metal shader blurs the picture progressively toward the top and shades the upper corners, all driven by the lid angle. Nothing is warped or moved.
Nothing leaves the Mac
Frames live in GPU memory for a single draw call and are discarded. No files, no network, no recording.

No hinge sensor? MacFold still folds.

The MacBook Air M1 and 13-inch MacBook Pro shipped without a hinge sensor. MacFold does not leave them out — it reads the ambient light sensor in the display bezel instead, and switches to that mode by itself.

  • Reads the bezel light sensor

As the lid comes down, the sensor faces less of the room light. MacFold turns that drop into the fold, live.

  • Detects your Mac automatically

Hinge sensor available: it is used. Not available: No-sensor mode takes over — no settings to hunt for.

  • Manual mode on any Mac

A slider drives the fold by hand if you just want the look, sensor or not.

Honest note: No-sensor mode is an estimate. Room lighting affects it, and the app labels it plainly on screen.

Questions

Is it a subscription?

No. Pay once and keep it. One key covers three of your Macs, and updates arrive through the app.

Does it touch external monitors?

No. Only the display attached to the hinge folds; anything on an external screen is left alone.

What if I close the lid all the way?

The Mac sleeps like it always does. MacFold animates while the lid is moving and simply stops when the display goes dark.
